The memorial commemorates the men and women who served in the Fire Service during the Second World War. British wartime Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, said of the fire service, “[they] were a grand lot and their work must never be forgotten”.

With the outbreak of the Second World War, conscription, and the Blitz campaign against Britain, firefighters were much needed. Beginning around January 1938, the service ran a large recruitment campaign for the Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS). This was particularly due to the political shape of Europe at the time.

The fire brigade had around 2,500 officers and firefighters. With the AFS recruitment this increased with a further 28,000 recruits, both men and women. By 1943, over 70,000 women had enrolled. They assisted with fire watching, driving, and ran the communications networks. The AFS firefighters issued equipment was a steel helmet, rubber boots, trousers and waterproof leggings. Due to shortages, some used post office uniforms. Most of these crews used a trailer water pump that was towed by taxis.

On 7 September 1940, the Blitz started, and there was a period where London was bombed for 57 nights in a row. For many members of the AFS, this was their first experience of firefighting. During the first 22 days of the bombing campaign, the firefighters fought nearly 10,000 fires.

By the end of the war the London Fire Service had attended over 50,000 calls. 327 London firefighters lost their lives whilst trying to save civilians and buildings in the capital. This same bravery was seen across the country in many other cities and towns.

The memorial’s three bronze firefighters depict a scene from the Blitz as they tackle a fire. The names of those who died during this period are recorded around the base on the memorial plaques.

A service is held annually on 7 September, the date of the start of the Blitz in 1940, to remember those who served in the Fighter Service.
