As one of the boundaries of the perimeter, the damage to the Weverstraat was considerable. German artillery caused much of damage, but the invasion of the perimeter was narrowly averted.
Just as the Stationsweg above the Utrechtseweg formed the boundary between the British and German troops, the Weverstraat formed the boundary between the troops below the Utrechtseweg. On the eastern side of the perimeter, the British had already been pushed back a long way and continued to face heavy attacks here.
At the junction of the Weaverstraat and the Dam, some German armoured vehicles penetrated the British lines. Their objective was to pass through the British defences to cut the perimeter in half. The German troops were very close to succeeding in this. Near Dam square, the Weaverstraat was defended by glider pilots of G Squadron. The German artillery kept coming into their line of defence, but the British troops managed to push them back with anti-tank weapons and grenades. Because of the constant shelling of the houses where the glider pilots were located, they had to seek protection in trenches in the backyards.
