As the Second World War drew to a close, the Frisian port city of Harlingen became the stage for one of the last intense battles in the Netherlands. In April 1945, while large parts of the country had already been liberated, Harlingen remained under German control. Canadian forces advanced with determination, facing fierce resistance in the city’s streets and around its strategic harbor. Their arrival marked a turning point, not just for Harlingen, but for the entire region of Friesland.

This walking route leads you through Harlingen and into the surrounding villages of Herbaijum, Wijnaldum, and Midlum—each of which played a role in the final chapter of the war. Along the way, you’ll walk along the Dokkade of Harlingen where German forces were disarmed and removed after the city’s liberation. In the center of Harlingen, you’ll hear gripping stories from its citizens, the occupation and the fighting for liberation. The trail outside the city combines the Frisian landscape with stories in among others Herbaijum, Midlum and Wijnaldum, where you'll find some Commonwealth War Graves—a solemn reminder of the price of freedom.
