Diepenheim, like Haaksbergen, was liberated on April 1, 1945, making it one of the first towns in Overijssel to be captured by Canadian soldiers. During the liberation, there were casualties among the Allies, as shown by the story of Corporal Wilson and Private Stacey. The death of Canadian soldier Gaston Nadeau was especially tragic; he drowned in the Diepenheimse Molenbeek in May 1945 while on leave.

The route leads through the charming center of Diepenheim, with the watermill, Huis Diepenheim Castle, and Warmelo Castle as its defining landmarks.
